Dressing for YOUR shape

Pear:
As weight fluctuates so does your shape and so should your style. For a long tme, I was a size 0 to a size 4. My shape was more pear and narrow. During that time, I wore fitted jean pants (no belt), fitted tops and dresses that didn't necessaryily hug my waist like I do now. That is because the need to define your midsection is less necessary when your top appears thin.

Hourglass: It is extremely important for hourglass ladies to define the waist - or where your top ends (to put it politely).

[Crop Top: Express, size: 8, Skirt: Bloomingdal's, size:8]

Top heavy: I believe in cleavage. I don’t know why more ladies don’t take Salma Hayek’s or Scarlett Johansson’s lead. If you have it, flaunt it. If you don’t, you don’t (*you probably have those long legs or that great hair that I keep mentioning). I know your girls may make a few remarks but trust me, everyone loves it. Just be aware of where and when, but even then, do you. Head up, back straight, smile on.

Bottom heavy: Dresses that fit at the waist look the best. Stay away from pants even if they have a belt and especially, shorts. *Try flowing skirts with a belt at the waist and a top with color and POP. During the summer no tights, during winter black tights work with everything. Head up, back straight, smile on.

Thin: You ladies have it easy but there are still things that work better than others. I love skinny jeans on my skinny girls. I love a basic pair of flats on you ladies too. Plain and simple. Lots of solid colors. Fitted and tight at night with a wide neck to show your collar bone. Show your thin frame and embrace it. Also, go braless. Trust me, it looks good. Head up, back straight, smile on.

*Use colors to your advantage. See below as I use color to 'hide' a day of lunching and drinks with friends.

Hair success = Drybar

If you can't do it, please blow dry + curl or straighten with an iron. If you are part of that lucky 1% who has no frizz, voluminous hair, I HATE YOU.

Hair Color = Wear what looks good on YOU and not what you see in magazines
As far as I'm concerned, I should have been ombre since birth. I always struggled with going too dark (*I had black hair for a time) or too light (*I had white hair for a time) depending on the season. While it is true that during the summer a hint of highlights brightens you up, no need to over do it.
[Dress: H&M, size: 8]

I am Peruvian, Chinese (mother) and English, Irish, German (father). This means that while hispanic, I am also medium to fair depending on the season. During the winter, I have done all shades of brown to black and during, summer all shades of blonde. Currently, I am enjoying NOT dying my roots and just applying bleach on the bottom (*My NYC hair colorist, Kristin Levy, Kristin.Levy@aol.com).

COLOR is 'IN' but it doesn't mean it is for you. Personally, I love it. Therefore, I have it. I added a touch of Navy underneath for shock and fun at night.

Hair accessories = Hats, Headbands and Flowers
[Bebe dress, size: 2 and Henri Bendels headband]

Not all hair accessories look good on me. Try a few and decide what you like. Personally, my head is a bit large and some hats make my head look HUGE. This is not me fictitious, this is me being honest with myself. That is the main aspect of personal fashion and style. *Remember: When you get compliments that means it is working.

Concert Wear Motto

Concert Wear:
Concert Wear Motto: 'When in Rome'

Depending on the music genre, dressing for a concert can be fun! When I go to a country show or a rap concert, I dress for the occasion. You know the saying, ‘When in Rome’. Do just that.

Can you guess what concert I went to?

Nails ARE noticed!

Whether for a Friday night out, a work event, fashion week, a wedding, a birthday or just headed to the office, here are a few of my personal faves.

I love long nails.

They are feminine and beautiful. They make a dress go from ‘pretty’ to glamorous. BUT, I have bad allergies and tend to scratch myself often. Mostly on the face. Therefore, beware but they do look the best. If you can, do it.

I get my nails done at Sakura on the Upper East Side, NYC. Also, at Valley Nails in the village. I am doing natural nails now but for long lasting, I do gel. Sometimes the best manicure is the cheapest. Expensive doesn’t always mean long-lasting or well-done.

In NYC, I recommend J&J for the weekly mani/pedi. The color will last and it is $20.

What about jewelry?

I don't care what people say, it is all in the details.

Some of my friends think that jewelry and nails go unnoticed in photos or even in general, but I disagree. A plain outfit can go from boring to hip in moments with a huge gold watch and a few bangles.

H&M gold and silver bangles ($5, size: M/L), Bloomingdales ring ($150, size 8) and H&M gold and silver rings ($5, size: M/L)

H&M gold bangles ($5, size: M/L), Michael Kors Mens gold watch  ($250, size Mens)

*My final and most important note is 'don't be afraid to wear MENS' anything especially watches and hats*

Let's talk Makeup!

Let's talk Makeup! Wear what looks the best on YOU! Not what is trendy.

The most important thing about fashion in general - and your personal style is recognizing what looks good on YOU. It doesn't matter what the latest trends are or who will be wearing that bright TEAL jumpsuit - as long as you dress for your body, skin tone and face. Take a good long look and highlight what makes you *shine*. All of the other 'in' trends will fall into place.

Please note: *It is okay to be different especially in fashion.

[Top: Vegas T-Shirt cut by hand from a random airport tourist shop, size: M]

I used to wear lots of eye shadows and liner when I was in high school and college but throughout the years as I identified with my own personal style, I decided less was more. Instead, I focus on what I want to POP in photos or in a long conversation with my best friend over a glass of wine.

* I never leave the house without my eyebrows filled in, concealer on, blush and lipstick/liner.*

1. Eyebrows
I love a thick brow. Does it look good on me? Not so much. If I could, I would pull off the 'Blue Lagoon' Brooke Shields eyebrows daily but I can't. My face is apple shaped at my lightest weight and at my normal weight, pretty round. Therefore, I have to shape it. Eyebrows that arched and highlighted in dark brown shades look the best on me. Again, if you can do the full brow, do it.

2. Concealer or Foundation - or both?

I don't use both. Why? Because I have tons of freckles. I don't mind them. My skin is more on the dry side (*we will get to face washes and skin types later). I tend to look for moisturizing concealer and apply under the eye to cover my very dark circles inherited from my father. I sleep, try a variety of creams and masks but these circles are not going anywhere. I have tried every brand. Currently, I use MAC concealer Pro Long Wear in NW 25. It lasts my entire work day with a minor touch up to transition to night. Lately, I have been use the ‘AirFlash’ Dior spray foundation to finish my look. It is expensive but the Sephora air brush foundation works just as well.

Shown above, I am in blue: Eyes, Urban Decay in Mildew. Bush, Nars Mata Hari. Lips, MAC – Matte, LipStick and Liner, cheap orange from Duane Reade

3. Liner and Blush

Daily, I wear a green, blue or brown liner just under my eye (*I have medium brown eyes with no yellow or light highlights in them). At night, I tend to do liquid liner on top for a ‘cat eye’ effect because my personal eye shape. *This ‘cat eye’ is not for everyone. Currently, I use Urban Decay liners (black and mildew) and Sephora Colorful blue eyeliner. MAC liquid liner in black is also recommended.

Daily, I wear blush. This is important. It gives me a flushed color and a glow. Currently, I use Nars Mata Hari. My skin tone is a bit olive but can be pale. I do not have a pink undertone at all. I do not pay $50 for a special blush brush nor do I buy expensive brushes for any products. I pick up a simple one from Sephora or Duane Reade – and take care of them by cleaning often and not smashing into the bottom of my purse.

*For eyes that are blue or green, black liner at night is intense and POPs on you. I love highlighting blue eyes with a similar shade of blue underneath to bring out the color (the same goes for green eyes). Make sure not to apply too much eye shadow with the same color though. This will bring you back to the 80’s which has not come back yet.

3. Lips (*MY FAVORITE)

I have thin lips but you would never know. Without paying for an injection of filler (even though I totally would), I highlight my lips by using lip liner. Yes, lip liner. If you do not use lip liner you are missing out. Throw away the gloss ladies because lip liner will make your lips STAY all day and add that extra bonus of FULL and LUSHIOUS lips. What I do is line just outside my bottom lip and very carefully draw a line on my top lips (the thinnest part for me) where I wish they were…and I fill it in. I try to find a similar shade of lipstick, typically a matte or light creamy shade to fill in the bottom and top. I, once again, will cover my lips in the liner. Right now, I wear Spice in MAC during the day. At night, I change to a red or a pink for fun.

Most often brands and shades that I use:

MAC – Spice, lip liner (daily, a dark pink)

MAC – Fig, Lipstick (daily, a dark pink)

Urban Decay – Anarchy, lip liner (night, a bright pink)

MAC – Matte, LipStick (night, dark red)

If I have to do a gloss, I use: Nars, Turkish Delight (nude pink)

Fall: Street Fashion - "Hannah" on the Upper East Side, NYC

As an intense girly girl, I can openly say when someone is gorgeous. When I ran into Hannah on the Upper East Side, I had no choice but to stop and ask to take her photo.

Street Fashion - Hannah

Hannah's Stats

Age: 21
Height: 5’7
Shoes: Target (7 ½)
Pants: American Apparel (S)
Jacket: Target (S)
Shirt: Necessary Clothing (S)

What I really dig about this look is her ability to pull off the masculine blazer with the edge of the American Apparel pants. This transitions from a chilly summer night to Fall in a graceful yet very Manhattan way. I also think it’s important to note Hannah’s stats. Not everyone can pull off this look (myself included). Please recognize your body and embrace what will highlight YOUR best asset. For Hannah, her legs are LONG. Thus, her ability to pull of what might be an inappropriate look for some – in a very stylish and appropriate way for her and her shape.
